ADC12 Aluminium Alloy: Composition, Properties and Uses

24 September 2026

ADC12 is the most widely used aluminium alloy for high-pressure die casting in the world. It is defined in the Japanese standard JIS H 5302 and, thanks to its high fluidity, dimensional stability and reasonable price, it is the first choice of many parts makers.

ADC12 chemical composition

ElementWeight %
Silicon (Si)9.6–12.0
Copper (Cu)1.5–3.5
Iron (Fe)1.3 max
Zinc (Zn)1.0 max
Manganese (Mn)0.5 max
Nickel (Ni)0.5 max
Magnesium (Mg)0.3 max
Tin (Sn)0.3 max

Why is ADC12 so widely used?

  • Excellent fluidity: the high silicon content lets the metal fill complex, thin-walled dies.
  • Good strength and machinability: the copper improves hardness and makes the part easier to machine.
  • Resistance to die soldering: iron within the permitted range stops the melt from welding to the steel die.

Equivalent alloys

In composition, ADC12 is close to the American alloy A383 and the European alloy AlSi11Cu3. In practice, an exact match should be confirmed by comparing the composition tables with the needs of the part.

Applications

Gearbox and clutch housings, engine brackets, home appliance parts, power tool bodies and pumps are typical ADC12 applications. The alloy is not suitable for parts that need heat treatment or high ductility; for those, A356 is a better choice.

ADC12 ingot is one of the grades produced by Almas Aluminium. See the composition table or contact us for an ADC12 ingot quote.
