The density of pure aluminium is about 2.70 g/cm³, or 2,700 kg/m³ — roughly a third of steel (about 7.85) and copper (about 8.96). That lightness makes aluminium ideal for reducing the weight of cars, aircraft and structures.
Density of common alloys
| Alloy | Approx. density (g/cm³) |
|---|---|
| Pure aluminium (1xxx) | 2.70 |
| 6063 | 2.69 |
| 6061 | 2.70 |
| 5083 | 2.66 |
| 2024 | 2.78 |
| 7075 | 2.81 |
| A356 | 2.68 |
| ADC12 | 2.74 |
| LM6 | 2.65 |
Heavier elements such as copper and zinc raise the density slightly, while magnesium and silicon lower it a little.
Calculating weight from density
Weight = volume × density. To quickly work out the weight of round bar, billet, tube, sheet or ingot, use our online aluminium weight calculator.
Density and casting quality
In the foundry, comparing the density of a sample solidified under vacuum with that of a normal sample (the density index test) shows how much gas is dissolved in the melt — a simple quality check explained in our article on degassing aluminium melts.
